Grazing at Dusk
Grazing at Dusk
Inspired by a trip I took with a friend back in 2009, we were cycling around the Outer Hebrides; just us, our bikes and a whole lot of oats in all of the forms…..porridge, oatcakes, flapjack…! We were sleeping in Bothy’s and just as we were approaching our next one for the evening, there was a wonderful light. We were right on the edge of the coast, and to the west was a field of cows. I grabbed my camera right away to capture the charming scene of the cattle’s silhouettes against a beautiful stormy, dusk sky. That moment, that light, remains in my mind today as part of our adventure into the wilds of Scotland.
My painting of the scene, captures the essence of the place in that moment in time and I hope it brings as much joy to you, for as many years as the memory etched into my mind brings me. It amazes me how such a short, almost fleeting moment can hold such feeling and create such a strong sense of being alive and wonder. It must have been less than 5 minutes that I stood outside in the cold wind that was whipping around me and perhaps the light didn’t even last that long, but I can remember it just like it was yesterday.
I am often in awe of nature, I love the changeability of skies and I think that sometimes we must just be still in the moment with it.
The painting feels to me a very calming piece, despite the stormy skies, it’s wild yet very grounding with that earthy palette.
If you have any questions at all about the painting, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I have used acrylic paint on a box canvas that measures 100cm x 70cm and is 35mm deep. It is framed in a solid wooden, contemporary white frame. It will bring some depth, grounding and peace to any room.
